What is CIS?
Kestral's Clinical Integration System (CIS) is a tool that allows users with a TCP/IP connection to quickly retrieve medical information from many existing sources, via a friendly browser-based interface. The CIS project is designed to harness the power of several emerging new technologies, including the internet, to create a practical real world application, unique in the field of medical information systems.
How Does CIS Work?
The CIS system acts as a web server, providing access to clinical details from a number of different sources. End-users interact with the system using a web-browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Apple Safari. Since browsers are provided with most modern operating systems, there is no need for the installation or purchase of complicated client end software. Users are able to search for and view certain information for a patient, depending on their security permissions.
What do I Need to Run CIS?
Server
The CIS server software runs on Windows 2000/XP/Server 2003. CIS requires database support. Supported databases include Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 and Sybase ASE.
Browser
Any Web browser supporting SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), HTTP 1.0, and HTML 3.2 can be used with the CIS system. To provide a more functional interface, Java will be used where the browsers support it, though it is not a requirement.
Is CIS Secure?
The CIS system is secure to use over the Internet as well as on an intranet.
Access to the information resources from the CIS system is granted or denied on an individual basis. Users are assigned to groups and the groups are assigned access levels. Because much of the information presented by the CIS system is sourced from other systems with their own security, CIS can be configured to utilise this security.
